Chapter 25

Year 738—Present Day Samsara

As soon as Magnus and the others caught up with the convoy, Magnus ran over to Hanuman to check on Kashana. Magnus wiped the beads of sweat from her forehead and poured her some water from a commando’s canteen. “She’s getting weaker,” said Veseera as she approached, then took a concoction of herbs from her bag and rubbed it into the skin on Kashana’s chest. “The vapors will ease her breathing.”

“We need to keep moving,” the sergeant said as he approached. “The Sindakka don’t stop traveling at night. We do. Their reinforcements will close the distance when it’s dark. At our current rate, they’ll catch up by daytime tomorrow. But if we don’t make use of the day, they’ll reach us earlier.”

“Alright,” said Magnus. “Let’s move.”

Soon enough came the night, and day two of their trek had ended. The group set up the tent, got ready for bed, and called it a night. Exhausted from the hike and battle, it wasn’t long before they were asleep. Naruni was the lightest sleeper of the group, but Magnus was a close second. So, he instantly sprang to life when he woke up to someone rummaging around next to him and nearly attacked the person doing it—Ovonus. “What the heck are you doing!?” shouted Magnus, waking the others.

Ovonus fell backwards as he tried to make distance between them. “Don’t fret,” he said, “I just wanted to have a look.”

“At what!?” Magnus exclaimed before he realized that Ovonus’ snooping eyes had earlier shown interest in the isus steel Veseera had given him, and that Ovonus was looking for it. Magnus stood up and grabbed one of the Naruni’s katana and held it to Ovonus’ throat.

It was time for Ovonus to learn a lesson.

“You listen to me,” said Magnus. “You did your part in this mission but you need to stop being such a liability.”

“So it is real,” said Ovonus.

Magnus threw away the katana and put his hand around Ovonus’ neck. “I could care less about the stupid metal,” said Magnus. “It’s my duty now to protect you, but if for even a second doing so gets in the way of saving Kashana, I won’t have to think before I choose. No more problems from you, or you can find your own way home.” At that, Magnus released him and went back to his bed without a second thought. He made his point, and he could tell that the others in the tent respected him for it.

Later in the night, Magnus awoke to a flying insect buzzing in his ear. He noticed Helix awake as well, swatting the air at the same problem. Veseera’s flower-based bug repellent seemed to be wearing off, but Magnus remembered seeing a patch of the same flowers just outside the tent so he stepped out to find them. Although the darkness of the jungle made it difficult to navigate, he eventually found the flower patch. He picked enough of them to protect the group, put them in his pocket, and made his way back for the tent.
